KSP Post 9 Investigating Fatal Shooting in Johnson County; One Man Charged

THEALKA, Ky. — Kentucky State Police Post 9 is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday in Johnson County.

According to KSP, Paintsville 911 notified troopers of a shooting at a residence on Main Camp Branch on August 1, 2026.

When officers arrived, they found Richard Roberts, of River, unresponsive in the driveway with an apparent gunshot wound. Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene by the Johnson County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Roberts and Blake Webb were involved in a brief physical altercation before Webb allegedly fired a handgun, striking Roberts.

Police said Webb left the scene but was taken into custody nearby a short time later.

Webb, 27, of West Van Lear, was arrested and lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. He is charged with:

Murder

Tampering with physical evidence

Possession of a handgun by a convicted felon

Detective Joseph Coleman is leading the investigation. KSP personnel were assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Paintsville Police Department.

The investigation remains ongoing.

All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
